New Technology at Crux
New Year, New Toys!
One of the goals, and founding principles, of Crux Retail is to continually seek out new technology as well as educate our clients on new materials and manufacturing techniques. This year Crux Retail introduced two new pieces of equipment that will greatly enhance capabilities and offerings for our clients. While these machines are not completely groundbreaking or “busting at the seams” with space-age technology, they do have small yet important improvements on previous versions that make great differences in productivity.
The first of these machines is a recently released printer from HP using their Scitex print technology. The HP FB550 is a digital UV-cured printer capable of printing up to 1200×600 dpi. It’s standard configuration is 6-color (CMYKcm) with the added ability to print white (CMYK + White). The 6-color configuration, which adds light cyan and light magenta, is great for creating better clarity and the removal of harsh ‘halftones’ in lighter areas of photos such as flesh tones and blue skies.
The ability to print white is not immediately new to the world of digital printing. However the past few years have given way to major innovations in the technology. The FB550 prints white with an incredible amount of saturation which results in a solid layer of white ink coverage. Whether viewing the white independently or completing the image with color, the final result is impressive. Take a look at a recent print job that we completed where we printed directly to 3/4″ stained plywood panels:
Zund Cutting System
The second piece of machinery that was added to Crux’s arsenal this winter was a Zund G3 3200 cutting system. This machine is the silent warrior that makes graphics, and POP possible. Equipped with an intelligent camera, the Zund is capable of quickly detecting the positioning of graphics printed on a sheet and trim them to size with accuracy down to a 1/64″. This trimming can be done using any one of the many tools available on the Zund including a simple drag knife, and electric oscillating knife (for intricate shapes on thick foam or honeycomb), as well as a 1KW router. Additional tools that we have added include a scoring wheel for making quick sample boxes and scored sheets and a V-cut tool which places a “V” shaped cut in foam board or honeycomb for creating uniqued dimensional objects.
